Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
I have just played Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes on the GearVR and it is absolutely awesome. It make me excited for the future of mobile VR, and VR gaming. Let me give you a little background on the game and why you should absolutely get your hands on it.
When I was at PAX East this year I had the pleasure of seeing Keep Talking in person. At the time they were running it on a DK2 with an XBox controller, and it was a fun accessible experience. The game forces you to collaborate with a "bomb expert" (some poor friend with a bomb diffusal manual) to cut wires, press buttons, and disarm a briefcase bomb before it explodes killing and embarrassing the team tasked with diffusing it. The gameplay is smooth, allowing (and requiring) you to rotate the bomb in space to see the batteries, serial number, plates, lights, and ports that adorn the sides and back. And every one of these things potentially plays a part in your success.
You see, the bomb diffusal manual contains a ludicrous number of if-then like descriptions of the modules that make up the bomb, and how to proceed and disarm them. Things like 'if the wire module has three wires and one of them is white: cut the first wire.' (I might be inaccurate, I don't have the manual in front of me as I pen this.) But the bomb can generate up to 11 modules on the front and back alone. Each module is it's own exercise in team building. This makes Keep Talking a great game for strengthening communication between friends, families, romantic partners, and beings from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.
The thing that Keep Talking does which blows me away (besides being a fantastic, seated, VR game) is how it has managed to port to mobile VR. One of the challenges mobile VR has to surmount is the lack of input. In most cases you only have one or two (or in some cases, no) buttons. This means that the conventions of control have to be re-addressed. They have utilized the touch and swipe controls of the Gear's side panel to craft an enjoyable, challenging, and overwhelmingly successful game.
If you have a DK2, or a GearVR go get Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes. Then find friends you like and go to town. It's an absolute pleasure and a comforting peek at the coming mobile VR future.
